Chemical Quadrant
The Chemical Quadrant is the body’s chemistry that is influenced by what enters it and what is released in its effort to maintain a state of balance, called homeostasis. What you put “in and on” your body has the power to clean all your systems and maintain that homeostasis, but it needs to be the right fuel for it to happen.
Starter Tips:
- Refill Your Water: Water is more than something that quenches your thirst – it’s essential for the kidneys and other bodily functions. It’s also responsible for lubricating joints, forming saliva to help digest our food, delivering oxygen throughout the body, cushioning the brain and spinal cord, regulating body temperature, maintaining blood pressure, and preventing kidney damage. Most people don’t realize we lose two to three liters of water a day – through sweat, breath, urine, and bowel movements – and our body needs that water to dissolve essential nutrients, minerals, and chemicals in our biological process. To find out how much water you should be drinking, a general guideline is to take your weight and divide that number in half. That will be the number of ounces you want to consume daily.
- Chew Your Food: If you’re relying on your stomach to tell you when it’s full, chewing your food is critical. The brain must receive a series of signals from digestive hormones secreted by the gastrointestinal tract to register your satiation. These hormonal signals are released as partially digested food enters the small intestine. When you eat too fast, you don’t allow enough time for this hormonal cross-talk system to work. There are several ways to practice this tip. Some experts recommend the “breath-bite rhythm.” When you take your first bite, place your utensil down. After you’ve swallowed your food, take a breath. Pick up your utensil again, take another bite, and put your utensil back down. Chew and swallow your food. Take another breath and repeat until you are satisfied. Another method is to count and chew each bite 25-40 times.
